Position Responsibilities

Job Duties

IF YOU ARE A CURRENT OHIO DEPARTMENT OF TAXATION INTERMITTENT EMPLOYEE, you do not need to apply to be considered. You will be contacted to begin work according to business needs.

The Ohio Department of Taxation is seeking multiple Intermittent Data Entry Operator 1's to assist in the processing of mail during Personal Income Tax Season (approximately March through June).

During personal income tax season, the Ohio Department of Taxation receives hundreds of thousands of tax returns from taxpayers statewide.
Our intermittent staff is crucial for us to issue refunds and process tax returns and payments timely.

Intermittent Data Entry Operator 1s (DEOs) work on an as-needed basis and generally work full time from February until June, depending on business needs. We hire two types of DEOs: keyers and scanners. Simply stated, keyers type information into data entry equipment using a keyboard; scanners scan organized mail into machines for processing. Keyers must be able to type 10,000 keystrokes per hour (kph) to maintain minimum production standards.

Due to the volume and urgency of the work, employees are discouraged from taking vacations during this time.

Available positions will be filled as the need arises.

Job Preview:
Types information into data entry equipment using a keyboard (must be able to sit for long periods of time)
Scan mail into machines for processing (must be able to stand for long periods of time)
Must be able to lift 10 lbs. (lifting/carrying mail trays)
Most DEOs work from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., depending on business needs
Employment typically lasts from February until June, depending on business needs

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the minimum qualifications shown below:
Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary (e.g., a high school diploma); and 1 course or 3 months' experience in typing
OR
Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above (e.g., a GED and typing experience/training)
Please indicate on your application how you meet the minimum qualifications (e.g., possession of a high school diploma or GED and experience in typing).

In addition to meeting these qualifications, all candidates will be required to complete three background checks prior to hire:
Criminal History Background Check - Having a conviction on your record will not automatically exclude you from consideration; Human Resources will review the nature of the conviction before issuing a determination on your eligibility for the role.
Tax Compliance Check - All Department of Taxation employees are required to promptly file and pay tax returns; you will not be permitted to work for our Department until any unpaid tax obligations are resolved.
Prior State Service Check - If you have worked for the State of Ohio before, we will review your employment history to determine your eligibility for employment with our Department.
All Data Entry Operator applicants are required to complete a 10-minute keystroke test at the time of the background checks. Applicants who score at least 8,500 kph will be considered for keying positions; applicants who score less than 8,500 kph will be considered for scanning positions.

Job Duties in Order of Importance: (These duties are illustrative only. Incumbents may perform some or all of these duties or other job-related duties as assigned.)

80% - Operates keyboard on data entry equipment (e.g., key to disk, tape or card, video display terminal), operates electric typewriter keyboard to transfer coded data to free or preprinted forms for optical scanner.

20% - Performs variety of clerical tasks related to data processing work (e.g., proofreads, files, distributes & mails output, totals data, maintains entry logs).
